HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN REAL ESTATE?

Six years.

WHERE DID YOU START?

I started at Maher Real Estate, I had just moved to Bendigo, got my Agents Rep Certificate and I dropped off my resume with a small child in one hand and a toddler on my hip. I left feeling like I had no chance, however as an experienced Graphic Designer it was a very pretty resume and it landed me the job! I started in Sales, and was thrown very much in the deep end!

IS IT YOUR DREAM JOB?

YES! This is my dream job. I love the competitive nature of the job, I love the relationships you build, and I truly love helping people navigate huge life transitions.

BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

Making the move to McKean McGregor. Ever since I started in real estate in Bendigo it was obvious that MM were the leaders in the field, they had an elite brand and seemed to always list the best properties. Now that I am here, I can confidently say that this is the best workplace I have ever worked at, regardless of industry. Nowhere else have I ever felt so supported and valued.

WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

I can't think of any! I've had a pretty funny one though. In the early days of my career, I was selling a tenanted property. When I booked a group in for a second inspection, the tenant had left a creepy gnome on the front doorstep. It was covered in blood and held up a little sign saying "F@%# OFF". Despite the eerie surprise, I still managed to sell the home.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?

I have learnt so much. I started off with no experience in buying or selling, even as a consumer, so I had a lot to learn on a very practical level. The major takeaway is that you cannot really lose with property if you hang in there long enough, prices historically have always gone up and they will continue to do so.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF DURING YOUR CAREER?

I have learnt that being a real estate agent is an energy game. You have to bring your best self to every appointment and it all starts at home.

HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

Having only been in real rstate for six years it has been a rather gradual shift. I am noticing a lot of young females entering the industry in sales, with lead female agents effectively balancing motherhood and a successful, fulfilling career.

IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?

If you are a vendor looking to sell, always do the styling and staging. In a tough market it can make all the difference. Presentation has never been more important.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Under promise and over deliver.

ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?

No. I believe everything happens for a reason. No regrets, just lessons!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?

It is not a job, it is a lifestyle. You will actually love working Saturdays (yes, your friends will think you're crazy), and you will love the flexibility of running your own schedule. It is rewarding to ditch the 9-5 and work over and above the call of duty and be paid on results not time. It is liberating to know that you are in control of growing your income.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION & BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU’VE LEARNT WHILE ON THE JOB?

You can save on almost everything... but not blazers! When I was studying for my Agents Rep Certificate, my lecturer was an older gentleman with a wealth of experience and a great sense of humour. He told us quite sternly "Look good, smell nice!"
