HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN REAL ESTATE?
I have been in the real estate industry for over 15 years.
WHERE DID YOU START?
I started as a Selling Agent in a real estate agency on the Upper North Shore.
IS IT YOUR DREAM JOB?
While I absolutely love being a buyer’s agent, this was not where I thought my career would take me.
BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?
A real highlight was buying a property for an overseas buyer from Hong Kong. We found him a property, bought it at auction, and completely furnished it, all without meeting face to face. It was a really fulfilling experience.
WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?
When I started out in real estate as a seller’s agent, I really didn’t enjoy the experience. It was a significant change from my corporate role to running my own business, to being a part of a more competitive culture. It was not what I expected, the lack of teamwork and support reinforced that this was not a good cultural fit.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?
That every day is never the same, that you never stop learning, and that what you put in is what you get out.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF DURING YOUR CAREER?
That I am stronger than I thought. I have realised how important it is to have fun and enjoy what you do.
HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?
There has been a significant shift and we have seen an increase in women in key leadership roles (e.g. CEO of Laing & Simons). It is less of a ‘boys club’ and more women are joining the industry. We also are seeing the growth of women’s real estate organisations and forums (e.g. Women in Real Estate)
IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?
Everyone’s property journey is unique, it’s important to have your affairs lined up, do your background diligence, have a professional team supporting you and be ready to go so that you can maximise any opportunities that come up. There is never a ‘good time’ to buy. If possible, always try to buy and sell in the same market. If you love a property buy it especially if it’s going to be your home.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Some of the best advice that I have been given include, staying humble! Treat others, the way you would like to be treated. Understanding that you don’t always know what’s happening behind the scenes and not to take things personally.
ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?
No
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?
Results take time, they don’t happen overnight. Find a mentor that can help you grow and someone that you can confide in and ask for advice. Have a growth mindset and be disciplined. Follow your passion.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
It’s ok to say no. Surround yourself with a great team and be true to your own values.
