Women In Real Estate: Meet Amy Young

Introducing Amy Young, Principal at Laing+Simmons Young Property. Amy heads up this new Laing+Simmons business with her husband, Matthew Young, and is based at The Studio in Careel Bay. Initially focusing on the Avalon, Newport and Palm Beach areas, it’s a true family business offering customers sales and property management services – with a difference.

We chatted with Amy about working in real estate and asked her what advice she had for other women wanting to get into the industry...

Started in 2002

Absolutely. I love helping families achieve their property dreams.

BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

Being part of the Pacific Bondi Beach project team which redeveloped the Swiss Grand Hotel at Bondi Beach. We achieved the highest values for a new development in Australia on a $/m2 basis, were awarded ‘Development of the Year’, by Urban Taskforce Australia and ‘Mixed use development of the year’ by Property Council of Australia.

WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

Real estate has many highs and lows. Learning to overcome the challenges builds resilience.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?

The best measure of success is the number of word of mouth referrals of clients.

Working with a customer centric sales focus is effective for all types of property, from one bedroom apartments, acreage land, prestige homes to large scale project marketing

HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

Yes.

IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?

Build a network of word of mouth referrers by giving 6 star service to every person you come in contact with. Be an active part of your community. You have influence to make a difference in many ways. Give what you can, and then give some more.  

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Listen first, talk second.

ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?

Loads! Loads of learning experiences as a result too.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?

What are your values? What kind of culture are you looking for in a team? Mystery shop your prospective employers by going to open homes and experience their customer service standards to learn if they are the right fit for you.  

DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION & BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU’VE LEARNT WHILE ON THE JOB?

I bring a one handed packed lunch to work every day, so I can save time by eating healthy, ‘on-the-go’.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

There are many options for part time or full time careers in property. If you love helping people, and working in a fast paced and dynamic environment then give it a go!
