Women In Real Estate: Meet Ashley Van Deyk

Meet Ashley Van Deyk, Executive Sales Director at BowerGray. She believes good things never come from comfort zones, and that being empathic and warm has nothing to do with how well you can negotiate with a client. Read on to find out more about what Ashley has learnt through experience...

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN REAL ESTATE?

I started nearly five years ago.

WHERE DID YOU START?

At McGrath as a Client Services Manager

IS IT YOUR DREAM JOB?

Absolutely, I wouldn’t do anything else.

BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

The first property I ever sold and calling the owner to tell them the offer.

WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

The first time I lost business to a competitor.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?

Real Estate is a simple business, it's about doing small things very well, doing them consistently and doing them without expecting anything back in return.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF DURING YOUR CAREER?

Good things never come from comfort zones, and if I am willing to be brave and persistent, anything is possible.

HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

I think they have changed greatly; more and more women are opting in to be Real Estate Agents, and that being empathic and warm, has nothing to do with how well you can negotiate with a client.

IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?

My real estate tip would be to remember change over price is always more important than a sale price. For example, if you are upsizing, and the market falls 10%... you are actually better off when it comes to change over price.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

You don’t have to always be better than your competition, you just have to be more persistent than them.

ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?

Not getting into real estate sooner.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?

Be prepared for the unglamorous side of real estate, if you focus on the work the outcome will take care of itself. If you focus on the outcome, the work that gets you there never gets done.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION & BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU’VE LEARNT WHILE ON THE JOB?

For me, I would always say don’t be afraid of wearing colour. You don’t have to wear black to look professional.
