NAME: Georgi Bates
TITLE: Georgi ( partner Cunninghams )
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN REAL ESTATE?
20 years
WHERE DID YOU START?
LJH Drummoyne as a Property Manager for 12 months before becoming a sales person.
IS IT YOUR DREAM JOB?
Absolutely.
BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?
Being part of some community charity auctions and being surrounded by so many giving, authentic caring people
WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?
Having an egotistical controlling client that yelled and tried to bully my team. Equally satisfying protecting my staff and letting the client go.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?
Working with a team that shares the same values is essential, ensure you have a sensational leader in the business.
"Back yourself and your team, love what you do, give back to the community and you will be supported. " - Georgi Bates
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF DURING YOUR CAREER?
I’m unstoppable and I have incredible energy, I’m driven and resilient however I cannot be successful without my team. I am part of something very special.
HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?
I believe there are more women entering the industry and as sales people or as lead generators etc which I love. Women can make a great career where they can balance family and make time for themselves.
There are also more females as Solictors/ Conveyancers and together we are getting better at supporting each other.
IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?
Buy property if you haven’t, or try and buy an investment. It’s very hard to go wrong in property and seek advice from a professional. Build a trusting relationship and do your homework. If it’s your own property and you are considering renovating, talk to a specialist in your area who can guide you for what buyers are looking for, as you may sell one day. Sometimes rather than selling it maybe be better to invest in your own home.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Buy property, it’s a commitment and ultimately can be your superannuation down the track.
ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?
No, I’m still always learning and am grateful for the flexibility that my career offers me. It allows me to have time with my family and be there for special moments.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?
Don’t take the first job on offer. Research, take some different Directors out for a coffee and check if they invest in training, share similar values, and what do they do in their community. Dont get caught up in the glitz and glamour as only 10 percent of agents actually make a great income. Be prepared to work very hard and the rewards will come.
DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION & BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU’VE LEARNT WHILE ON THE JOB
Speak to a stylist. I spoke to Amanda Delaforce (+61 415 880 692 amandadelaforce63@gmail.com) who went though my wardrobe and was honest with what colours don’t suit me and created a new wardrobe with my existing clothes showing me how to mix different jackets with belts , bags etc . She has also helped my team, she's worth her weight in gold. I feel some women need to dress more professional.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
This job is addictive, remember to stop and smell the roses and remind yourself what it’s all for. I also recommend trying to do the below:
* Invest in learning meditation ( which I need to get back into), exercise is crucial for a healthy mindset.
* Plan holidays to reward yourself for your hard work.
* Work with like-minded people and make sure you have fun along the way.
* Don’t get caught up in gossip and be proud of letting go of people in your life that are negative or don’t uplift you.
* Be there for your family, true friends and your community.
* Take some time out and divert your phone on your days off, or put an 'away from office email' message on with a timeframe of when you are back. You are no good to anyone if you work yourself into the ground and life is short, make the most of it and give it your best shot.
* Always try and think outside the box and back yourself.
