We had a chat with Karen and she shared her advice for other women wanting a career in real estate...

IS IT YOUR DREAM JOB?

Yes, to be successful in anything you do you must be passionate, so it never feels like work. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its challenges. I love the challenging days as this is where we grow and learn the most.

BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

Listing and selling my first property in 2017 after door knocking the owner from a tip off.  I was still working at Channel 9 A Current Affair and working Saturdays as an agent.  Will never forget this. Listing and selling that property gave me the courage to say good-bye to my awesome 20 years in television.

WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

None. Whilst some days are challenging and have bought me to tears, this is where we learn the most. I have had many tears especially at the beginning, but I never gave up or had second thoughts about my career.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?

It has nothing to do with selling houses, it’s about connecting with people, giving professional advice and having integrity in work and in your personal life. Be respectful for every opportunity to sell a home, it’s a privilege to be handed the keys to a property to sell.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF DURING YOUR CAREER?

Being the very best version of myself when no one is watching – mentally, physically and emotionally.  This is an energy game, and people need my energy and I need to be able to deliver.

HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

I think women are really stepping up as leaders in the industry and the general public are realising that women are great salespeople. I sell residential homes, the majority of the time we are selling to the wives who resonate with another female, and likewise I understand the my female vendors and how they are feeling about the sale’s process.

IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?

Keep yourself mentally and physically fit and set achievable goals. Never drop your standards and stay connected to your past clients.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Have laser focus and know your outcomes.  Set goals.

ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?

Not getting support staff soon enough.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?

Believe you can achieve great success and have support around you at home and at work. I could not do what I do without the support of my family, I share my goals and they understand why I work the hours I do.  My family didn’t understand my burning desire to succeed and were challenged by my extreme work ethic at the start of my career in real estate, but as I have become more successful they now play a big part in helping me succeed.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION & BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU’VE LEARNT WHILE ON THE JOB?

Always bring a spare outfit to work – just in case!  Everyone who knows me can verify my spare clothes hanging up in my car! You always need to look you best.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

Be true to yourself, have integrity and be kind.  Get a coach to hold you accountable. I have thre coaches, John McGrath, Adrian Bo and Dr Fred Grosse – all highly valuable and keep me accountable.
