Introducing Monica Shor, Associate Director Sales at Ray White Unlimited and Ray White Bondi Beach, and just awarded Ray White Elite NSW 2021/2022. Her career advice is to "be friendly but professional and understand the client you're dealing with and what they need from you. Be the solution to the problem don’t add the extra drama." HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN REAL ESTATE?

23 years

WHERE DID YOU START?

Raine & Horne Bondi Junction – Property Manager

IS IT YOUR DREAM JOB?

This is it. What other job has the flexibility to travel, do deals while drinking cocktails or work anywhere and rewards you for the effort you put in?

BEST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

Thankfully I have had many good experiences over the years for different reasons. Some have been smaller deals but have meant more because of the client's situation. A few that come to mind are the deals where the clients become part of your life and hence friends for life! One family I sold a semi for in Tamarama was going through an ugly family battle, I managed to sell it for $250k over the reserve and then sold their own semi in Dover Heights for $275k over reserve at auction. We then met up in Vegas at the end of that year and spent time hanging out.

WORST CAREER EXPERIENCE?

Being taken advantage of as a junior agent. I had older agents taking over my huge career establishing deals that I'd put together as their own. I missed out on commission I wasn’t aware I should be entitled to and then ongoing sales thereafter.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT REAL ESTATE DURING YOUR CAREER?

So many things. Work hard, work hard and work hard. You are being chosen by the client for what YOU bring to the table, so don’t try and be anyone else. There is only one of you so just be the best you! I have also learned that it's important to set goals and revise your goals as you progress in your career.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF DURING YOUR CAREER?

That you need to change with the times, learn as much as you can, but also never doubt yourself! Never let anyone tell you what you can or can't do! Be kind to yourself! There will be times you aren’t at your best and that’s okay. Just regroup and keep going.

HOW HAVE WOMEN’S ROLES IN REAL ESTATE CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

There are many more women in the industry as salespeople, not just support or admin.

IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR, ARE THERE ANY REAL ESTATE TIPS YOU COULD SHARE?

Things will always be challenging life, love, work, colleagues, and competition. You just need to focus on your end goal and keep going.

BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Play to your strengths.

ANY REGRETS REGARDING YOUR CAREER?

Yes, I didn’t travel enough to Europe in my 20’s. I always thought, there will always be another deal to be made. But most of all, I was too distrusting too many times. Don’t be afraid to share with other agents. Co-list, call in someone with more experience even if it means splitting the commission, 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN WANTING TO START A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?

Set your goals from the start, have a clear idea of what you want your career to look like and don’t be afraid of failing because you can always start again and work hard!

DO YOU HAVE ANY FASHION & BEAUTY TIPS THAT YOU’VE LEARNT WHILE ON THE JOB?

A car kit is a good weapon to have in case you have an appointment pop-up – deodorant, mints, cards, perfume, shoe polish. And always check the back of your shoe/heel. There's nothing worse than a tatty shoe, it gives a lot away about a person, a hairbrush, spare shoes and a spare top.  The better you feel about how you look the better you will feel in front of the client.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

Be friendly but professional and understand the client you are dealing with and what they need from you. Be the solution to the problem don’t add the extra drama.
